Tips for Parents Traveling without Their Kids

Traveling without your children can be upsetting and stressful for both you and them. When you have children, your perspective on travel changes. Normally, parents plan their vacations with their children's entertainment in mind, but when those vacations do not include children, parents often feel guilty and nervous.

Here are some things to think about before going on a trip without your children:

  • Prepare your child: If they are under the age of two, try to ensure that they will be at ease with the babysitter. It is preferable to leave them at home with their toys and belongings. If your kids are in preschool age, then they might believe that they did something wrong by leaving them alone. You should always explain clearly the reason for your trip.

  • Prepare the caregiver: Whether it is a babysitter, your parents, or another member of your family, you should go over the kids' routine, daily tasks, and other important issues with them, such as:

  1. At-home childproofing techniques

  2. What to do in the event of a fire, medical emergency, or an accident

  3. Records of children's allergies and medications, if any

  4. Placement of first-aid kit, flashlight, batteries, and so on

  5. List of doctor's phone numbers, hospitals, emergency services, police, and family members

  6. Your phone number and time you might be reachable

  7. Insurance cards and your child's medical history

  • Stock your cabinets with:

  1. Baby/kids food

  2. Baby accessories such as diapers, wipes, soap, and so on.

  3. Insect repellent, anti-inflammatory, sunscreen, thermometer, adhesive, antiseptic, and other medications

  • Prepare daily gifts for your child to open while you are away. He'd be delighted to find a surprise every day.

  • Make a plan with your child about your call schedule so he knows when you'll be calling him, as well as your travel schedule.

Don't expect things to go as smoothly as they did at home. Allowing some exceptions such as sleeping late, missing a shower, staying in his pajamas all day, or eating some sweets is acceptable. Your children will be safe at home if you plan ahead of time. The most important thing is that you choose to have fun while on vacation.

Enjoy your time with your partner, use it to reconnect with him, buy lots of souvenirs to share with your children, and have a fantastic vacation.
