Going On Holiday When Pregnant

Going on holiday when you are pregnant is a really great idea especially that after having your baby you won’t get soon a chance to lie on the beach and just relax!

Many of you will ask if it is safe to fly during pregnancy, and we will tell you: yes it is safe in your first and second trimesters! Moreover, you may find your second trimester (weeks 14 to 27) the easiest time to travel knowing that morning sickness is behind you and your energy levels are higher. If you are carrying one baby and you’re having an uncomplicated pregnancy, you can fly up to your 36th week of pregnancy but you should first check if the airlines you’re travelling with are willing to carry women who are more than 28 weeks pregnant, because some aren’t willing to! In all cases, you should first of all talk to your doctor if you are planning to travel abroad, for he has to check if you are having any medical problems that might not let you travel, such as spotting, diabetes, high blood pressure, or a previous early birth.

And to make your holiday as enjoyable as possible, follow the tips below:

  • Avoid activities that put you at risk of falling such as snowboarding, riding, waterskiing, windsurfing and climbing. Avoid scuba diving and other pressurized sports, and stay away from amusement park rides and waterslides. Instead, go for yoga, massage, swimming, visiting art galleries, etc.

  • Don’t pack a lot of stuff, for you will have to load and unload your suitcases. Make it easy on yourself and go light!

  • Wear comfortable clothes for your trip; sweat pants and an extra large shirt might not be super fashionable, but when you have to sit in a plane for several hours, who really cares about fashion?

  • Pack a lot of snacks and drink a lot of water!

  • Wash your hands very often and use the hand sanitizer! Germs like to travel during holidays too, so be sure to keep your hands sanitized and don’t touch your eyes, nose and mouth!

  • Make sure that you have in your handbag the contact number of a health care provider recommended by your doctor in case you need medical attention in the country you are travelling to.

  • If you feel sick let someone know immediately! It could be just motion sickness but it is better being safe than sorry!

  • If you feel any contractions or notice some spotting inform immediately the airplane hostess or any health care provider.

  • Once you arrive, keep up the good eating habits because healthy meals are essential for you and your growing baby.

Remember, you’re on holiday! Don’t let anything stress you and just enjoy your time!
