Abortion: Symptoms, Procedures And Treatment

Many pregnant women experience miscarriage during their pregnancy. Abortion is accompanied with physical and emotional distress. It is the spontaneous end of a pregnancy before a fetus can survive. The cause of miscarriage is not always determined. The most important causes are:

  • Hormonal problems

  • Diabetes

  • Infections

  • Collagen vascular disease

  • Chromosomal abnormalities

  • Abnormal structural anatomy of the uterus

What are the symptoms of a miscarriage?

  • Abdominal Cramps

  • Mild to severe vaginal bleeding

  • Evacuation of the contents of the uterus

What kinds of procedures are used for an abortion?

There are 2 types of procedures:

  • Surgical abortion: It involves the use of a vacuum up to 15 weeks of pregnancy or the dilatation and evacuation method if pregnancy is between 15 to 24 weeks.

  • Medical abortion: It is used only for pregnancies less than 9 weeks of gestation and involves the intake of a medicine that causes cramps and miscarriage.

It is very important to seek doctor’s opinion after an abortion if any of the below listed symptoms appear:

  • Severe abdominal pain and back pain

  • High fever

  • Foul smelling discharge

  • Severe bleeding

What is the treatment after miscarriage?

After miscarriage, the main concern is to make sure that all fetus tissues have been discharged out of the uterus. The gynecologist will perform an ultrasound to eliminate all concerns.

An antibiotic may be prescribed after curettage to prevent infections.

We have to consider abortion as a grief period for a mom who was excited about her pregnancy. Even if we identify the cause of miscarriage, abortion can happen again and no treatment is guaranteed but we should also keep in mind that even with repeated miscarriages, pregnancy can occur!
