Food Allergy and Holidays

Food allergies during holidays are one of our biggest concerns. Holidays are here and treats are ready to be distributed to kids. What to do and how to keep your child away from food that triggers allergy? You know that any tiny piece of a food that triggers allergy in your child can be dangerous. However, this doesn’t mean that your child is not allowed to celebrate holidays if he develops any food allergies. Most foods that cause allergic reactions are:

  • Peanuts

  • Seafood

  • Eggs

  • Wheat

  • Milk

  • Some kinds of fruits as strawberry

It is very critical for you to identify and eliminate any kind of food that causes allergic reactions. The reactions can go from a simple rash and bloating to a serious airways compress in the lungs and life threatening. It would be a stressful time for you and for your child. Try to follow the below steps to keep your child safe during holidays:

  • Talk with your host about the food allergy.

  • Put all bowls of nuts and candies on a high surface away from your child’s sight and reach.

  • Purchase treats that are allergen free for your child and keep them always in your purse.

  • Offer to prepare an allergen free dish that you can bring with you to your host house.

  • Keep always the medicines in your purse in case of any contamination.

  • It is essential to keep your child’s body hydrated in case of an allergic reaction; this is why try to make him drink plenty of fluids. A relaxing chamomile drink or a tea is good, but the best fluid is definitely water!

You can find lots of food substitute in the market that are specifically made for people who have allergies. Read well the labels and try to enjoy the holidays season with your child.
