Breastfeeding and Contraception

Breastfeeding is the best method to provide your baby with healthy nutrients. As well it is also beneficial for you. It is known as being the natural family planning method. This method called Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM) is known as being 98% effective, easy, inexpensive and causes no side effects. If you follow a pace in breastfeeding your baby regularly and exclusively you will be protected and your periods won’t return.

How does LAM work?

  • Start breastfeeding directly after delivery.

  • Breastfeeding should be the only and exclusive way to feed your baby, night and day, with a minimum of 8 breast feedings. No bottles or pacifier are allowed.

  • Breastfeeding sessions should be spaced no more than 4 hours.

  • Your baby has not started solid food.

  • Don’t give any supplemental liquids for your baby, as water or juice.

  • Your baby suckling stimulates a hormone called Prolactine that suppress FSH and GnRH. As a result, ovulation is suppressed and menstruation cycle stops. The possibility of getting pregnant is impossible.

What are the disadvantages of LAM?

  • LAM is less effective after your baby reaches 6 months of age.

  • It is very difficult to use this method with working mothers.

  • Once you decrease the breastfeeding sessions, you won’t be protected anymore.

  • It does not protect against sexual transmitted diseases

LAM method is effective 98% to 99% if used correctly. However you have to keep in mind that you might ovulate before your first period. It is recommended to use another birth control in case you cannot follow LAM technique. As long as your baby continues breastfeeding exclusively, LAM should protect you and plays a role of natural birth control.
